Defining the Present With the Past

Barbados in all of its beauty. The water is never the same colour, and it is always breathtaking

Using history to predict the future is a common occurrence in society. People who play the stock market do it, oddsmakers for professional sports betting do it, and the government does it.

Trends can be useful in many ways to provide a framework for what we think is going to happen.

But at the same time, it can be very limiting to assume that things will happen the way they always have. Even expecting others in your life to be as they have always been can be unfair.

While it can be helpful to have a certain conception or expectation of how things tend to work in any given situation, it can also stop you from seeing new possibilities.

We impose barriers and restrictions on what we feel is possible and what can’t be done. These limits are put into place by what has already occured.

When assumptions are made, the uniqueness of each situation is not allowed to unfold. Expectations can be too restrictive.

Struggle

I walked this beach in Puerto Rico for hundreds of hours. I finally found what I was looking for

Sometimes I look back and retrace the path that led me to where I am today. While I don’t indulge in this behaviour all of the time, there are moments when I find it useful to remember how far I have come.

I used to believe that struggling and working hard were the necessary components to finding success. I now know that struggling and working hard only made me miserable.

When you begin to find clarity and a sense of purpose, it is amazing how things start to flow with a sense of ease. Circumstances beyond your control begin to align themselves to assist you with what you are doing.

Coincidences and synchronicity become a normal part of life.

Discovering Who I Am

Yoga means union. By getting out into nature, I remember who I am

I have dreams. I now realize that they’re not my dreams, but the desire of consciousness to create through me. If I stifle these creative impulses then I’m stopping the flow of life through my being.

When not allowed to flow, the creative energy will stagnate. Denying these creative impulses can make you physically ill.

How many people are walking around in the world doing things they don’t want to do?

How many people are brave enough to listen to those inner urgings and to follow them with complete abandon? Can doing something you love ever turn into a bad thing?

Complaining and Indecision

Why do I go away in the winter? Because I can. The beauty of Varadero, Cuba

It seems that every time I engage with old friends, the majority of the conversation focuses on complaining. Just the other day I was reading some messages from friends online, and one of the girls was bemoaning the fact that winter was coming.

Another of the girls, who is living in a warm climate, mentioned that she missed having changing seasons. She remembered how much she loved watching the leaves turn colour on the trees, the cooler mornings, and enjoying a warm cup of hot chocolate in the evening. Those were her memories.

The other girl, who is in the cold climate, spoke of how it was dark all of the time, gray and dreary during the day, and either raining or snowing. She saw nothing good about the upcoming winter at all.

What we focus on becomes how we feel inside. It is impossible to feel joyful when your eyes look for nothing but unhappiness in your environment.

Embracing Change

Beautiful Puerto Rico. I spent months looking at this view. Even here the seasons change

It’s that time of year when summer is turning to fall, when the daylight is disappearing quickly and the trees are assuming the majesty of fall colours. Soon they will be bare, ready to stand strong against winter and the harshness of the cold.

It’s a great time to look at ourselves and begin to shed what we no longer need to carry too.

Everything around us changes. The world is built on change. I am not who I was a year ago, nor do I expect to be the same a year from now. And I accept that those closest to me will change too.

Change can be frightening as it reminds us of how fragile our existence really is, and how temporary our life situation is. We arrive, we live, and then we are gone. This is the one thing we all have in common.

One day, we will all arrive at the same finish line, and that is just the way it is.

Leave Fear Behind

No need to fear when you keep good company – here with the friendly police officers of Costa Rica

At the root of the inability to move towards your dreams lies fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or fear of criticism – these can be paralyzing when you need to take action to accomplish your goals.

Scientists say that we are born with only two fears – the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. All of our other fears are learned.

Depending on the circumstances that surrounded you as a child, you may have learned fears that have become so deep-rooted that they affect every decision you make in life.

This realization of what drives us from a subconscious level can be the key to opening up the vault to all of your dreams.

Think Only of What You Want

My view from my balcony on Canada Day – fireworks always bring our awareness to the present moment

When you truly become aware that you are in control of your thoughts, your life can change instantly.

Some people never recognize this potential within themselves. They feel that everything happens to them by chance, and that they have no control over the circumstances of life.

This just isn’t true.

While it is true that as children we have very little control over our life situation, as we get older we are able to design our lives in whatever way we choose.

Our thoughts and emotions play the biggest role in who we are and who we will become.

Just For Today Part Two

Leading the way, walking my own path in Costa Rica with the lovelies

Today, I will decide who I want to be and what I want to accomplish. I will take steps forward to realize my dreams.

Today, I will allow everything that comes within my sphere to be exactly what it is. I will not attempt to change anyone into who I think they should be. If they are harming me emotionally or physically, then I will remove myself from the situation.

Today, I will believe who others tell me they are. This can be through the words they use, but it can also be from the intuition I have about them. I will trust the feelings I get because they are acting in my own good.

Today, I accept that everything that comes to me is what I need. What I need is not always what I want, but it is there for a reason.

Be Who You Want to Be – Guidance

The best emotion – happiness! Find a reason to smile today

There is a way to know if you are heading in the right direction, a guidance system that will help you get to where you want to go.

The best navigation system is the emotions, the feelings we get deep within that are always present, but often ignored.

When I look back at some of the decisions I made in my life, the ones that led to challenging outcomes always seemed to spring forth from ignoring the discomfort that I felt at the time. There was always a slight sense of unease, but I would ignore it and plunge ahead anyways.

Whatever I subsequently went through was ultimately necessary for my growth, but at the time I wished I could have learned the lessons in an easier way.

Be Who You Want to Be – Allowing

Yup – allowed this to happen! (Toronto, Ont Woodbine Racetrack August 23 2014 Jeff Bratt and Dawn Lupul get drenched with ice water. WEG/michael burns photo)

Sometimes things just seem so clear. When it is someone else’s situation, it is so easy to know exactly what they are doing wrong and how they can fix it.

When it comes to ourselves, though, it is a different story.

The funny thing is, we all need to make our own decisions and learn from the consequences. If someone is constantly telling us what we should do and how we should act, then the valuable lessons are never received.

Parents do this with children, and for the most part it is necessary. Trying to limit the amount of physical harm they do to themselves is good parenting, but at the same time lessons can be learned much more quickly when some things are allowed to happen.

As in, you only touch a hot stove once.
