Repetition is a Mother Alright…The Daily, May 13, 2020

There’s a conspiracy theory in here somewhere

“An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does the truth become error because nobody will see it.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

When something is repeated over and over, it can take on the appearance of truth or at least some form of acceptance. The advertising industry is built on this premise. Say something enough times, associate it with something else, and the two will be forever linked in the minds of many.

Misinformation repeated endlessly takes on a life of its own. That is how conspiracy theories gain life and filter through society. As outlandish as some of these theories may seem, once they have been shared multiple times in multiple ways, they often assume an air of truth and authority.

Are there aliens at Area 51, or is the facility just used to test experimental aircraft for the military? Lee Harvey Oswald – guilty or innocent of shooting JFK? Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster are celebrities in their own right, without any real proof that they exist. How about chemtrails? And where exactly is Jimmy Hoffa?

With technology now allowing information to be shared across the world within seconds, the ability for falsehoods to spread rapidly is unprecedented. Always remember to use common sense when processing new information, and don’t jump to conclusions too quickly. Finding the facts is more difficult now than ever before.

Thought for Today – Be kind to yourself. It’s good to think of others but if you aren’t taking care of you, there will be nothing you can do for anyone else. If you need some support, reach out for it. If you need a break, take one. Nothing is normal right now and it’s okay not to be okay with it. Take care of your body and mind, and then show yourself some compassion. You don’t have to be a superhero every day.

The Right Way to Live – The Daily, May 12, 2020

The roots are where they are supposed to be. Life has an intelligence all of its own

“I could deny it if I liked. I could deny anything if I liked.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

Life goes on. It has to – there are no options. You are either living or not.

Some people choose to live with hesitation, going out into the world only when necessary and living the same day over and over. It’s neither good nor bad, it is just one way of going through life. Other people are constantly on the move, cramming as much activity into each day as they can.

Some people need to feel adrenaline to be alive. Roller coasters, fast cars, mountain climbing, bungee jumping, and parachuting are all activities designed to give that rush, that sensation of being in control but only by a thread. Others would never think of doing anything like that. It’s a personal choice.

Allowing others to express themselves in their own way is a beautiful way to live. It allows you the freedom to choose the same for yourself. Just remember the Golden Rule and then go about whatever you want to do. There are millions of different ways to live a life.

Mercury in Gemini – The planet Mercury has made its way into Gemini and will remain there until the end of the month. It’s a time of communication and satisfying curiosity. The mind can be more active and energetic which can help with developing new ideas or business ventures. Go with the flow and allow yourself to explore new possibilities.

Thought of the Day – Reach out to someone and see how they are doing. Keep the lines of communication open now more so than ever. Don’t wait for the other person to make the first move because time has a way of getting away from us. It’s never too late until it is.

“If you contemplate the Golden Rule, it turns out to be an injunction to live by grace rather than by what you think other people deserve.”

Flying Into the Future – The Daily, May 11, 2020

Flying just isn’t going to be the same, at least for awhile

Optimism is the one quality more associated with success and happiness than any other. — Brian Tracy

To plan or not to plan, and what to plan, that is the question. It is one of many questions we can consider right now, and the answers are elusive.

Out of every challenge comes the chance to forge a new path, to be at the leading edge of whatever is to come. If you can guess how things are going to be, then you can be in a position to capitalize on it.

Things can change quickly. Even if by some miracle a vaccine is developed and is in widespread use within 18 months, there are no guarantees that life will return to what we used to consider as normal. The longer this goes on, with the necessities of social distancing and isolating people who are exposed to someone who tests positive, the less likely that old behaviours will resume.

Air travel is an interesting consideration. The reason that flights were cheap and that it was easy to jump on a plane for a weekend getaway to a warm location or a quick business trip was because passengers were sandwiched in like sardines. Big volume and quick turnover allowed airlines to keep their prices competitive and still turn a profit. But with the new guidelines, this will change. Seats can’t be occupied like they were, and airports will no longer be places that encourage socializing and shopping.

Most of the discount airlines will struggle with the new reality. And even if flying still remains as affordable as it once was, are the travellers going to return in droves? if you are over 65 you might think twice about wanting to go anywhere, and anyone with underlying health conditions is likely to be more careful as well. This is a large segment of the population.

For more interesting thoughts on what might be ahead in the world of air travel, this article in The Star, Why Flying is About to Get More Expensive – For Good, is a great read.

Thought for the Day – Be true to yourself. Don’t force things and try to be someone who you aren’t. If you don’t want to do the same things you have always done, then don’t do them anymore. Sometimes all it takes is to drop something than no longer suits you to be able to find something that is even better.

Traveling on a Cruise Ship – The Daily, May 10, 2020

Not a cruise ship, just a little boat off the coast of Barbados on a cloudy day

I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am. – Albert Einstein

Travel has obviously been affected by the pandemic. Even if you wanted to go somewhere, there are very few places to go. But in an attempt to save some money and get back to a sense of normalcy, people are flocking to book cruises with Carnival starting in August of this year.

Carnival saw an increase of 600% in bookings in the three days after announcing this week that they would be sailing in August. It makes sense, because there were probably no bookings before the announcement, but it’s also an increase of 300% in bookings compared to the same time last year. Again, not a surprise because most people wouldn’t have any summer travel plans booked at this time so are looking to find a deal.

So, if you are looking ahead and thinking that a trip would be nice this summer, just make sure that travel insurance is available or that refunds are guaranteed by the company selling the trip. Also, Mercury goes retrograde from July 7th to August 1st so that might not be the best time to be on the move.

Sweden’s Gamble – It will be interesting to see in about two years from now when we can look back and analyze things, how the decision by Sweden not to close down the economy while keeping schools open and allowing people to go to restaurants and bars ended up working. Right now the decision doesn’t look that good, with Sweden having over 3000 deaths attributed to the virus compared to its neighbours of Norway (just over 200) and Finland (less than 300). Denmark has over 500 deaths, but all of these countries are considerably less than Sweden, and all of them locked down.

But after restrictions begin to lift, will Sweden enjoy an advantage in the long term? We won’t know until we know. The Swedish people are being good about social distancing, but they haven’t had to endure the widespread unemployment and economic fallout that other countries have. They are gambling with people’s lives, but in the end they may have made the right bet.

Time will tell.

Thought for the Day – Even if you are imprisoned, it is still possible to be free in your mind. That attitude is what propelled people like Nelson Mandela and Elie Wiesel to get to the other side. Learn to use your mind like the wonderful tool that it is and know that what you think is what your reality becomes. Think only of what you want.

Life After the Pandemic – The Daily, May 9, 2020

Yesterday’s full moon from Toronto

It’s interesting to read all of the different predictions being made by various experts about what life after the pandemic will look like. It’s all just guesses because there is really no way to know, but there are some assumptions that seem reasonable.

First, travel is likely to be affected for a long time. Even when borders begin to open, who will they open to? Will countries welcome foreigners with open arms, or will there be restrictions and quarantines? Suspicion of outsiders is likely to colour the way that visitors are treated. While tourism is a major economic force that is suffering greatly, it is difficult to envision that sector getting back to what it was anytime soon.

Losing Our Sense of Reality – The Daily, May 8, 2020

Advice for today – don’t pet an alligator. Don’t be reckless with your valuable life

Nothing feels the same anymore. As we move towards a different way of being, many of us are trying to bring the past with us. It won’t work. Clinging to the familiar and not allowing the changes that have happened is a form of denial. Try as we might, we can’t make it all go away.

It’s human nature to assume that anything that changes against our will is automatically going to be worse. What if it all works out and is better? What if we look back in a couple of years and say that, although it was a very difficult and tragic time, things actually needed to change and now life has improved?

It’s one different way to look at the situation. There are many.

Full Flower Moon – The Daily, May 7, 2020

Focus on what’s in front of you, but keep an eye on what’s in the distance as well

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”  – Maya Angelou

Howling at the Moon – It’s a full moon today, the last supermoon of 2020. That means that the moon will look bigger and brighter than normal because it is closest in its orbit to the earth right now. The full moon of May is called the Flower Moon, and is supposed to usher in a period of growth, warmth and abundance as new life springs forth.

But this year the full moon lands in the sign of Scorpio, which may temper the joy and enthusiasm while adding some suspicion and wariness. We want to celebrate the return to spring, but we are skeptical. Scorpio can be a dark influence at this time. You may react to others more harshly than you mean to, so it’s a good time to take a step back and not to respond in haste.

Just be a little more aware of your words, and understand that sometimes secrets need to come out for the good of all. It can be prudent to clear the air and stop being less than honest with those around you, or even with yourself. You may be more transparent than you would like.

Thought for Today – Recognize that sometimes things happen around you that affect the way you feel, even when you don’t understand what is going on. You may find your emotions are a little sharper right now, so it’s important to stay in the moment and stop before you say something you might regret later.

There is a lot going on energetically and fear is driving people to act in ways they normally wouldn’t. Be vigilant about your own feelings and notice how the people in your life are doing. Look around and see if there is someone who needs a little kindness and love right now.

Take one step at a time, and put one foot in front of the other. Sometimes that is enough.

“To lose patience is to lose the battle.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Accepting Change – The Daily, May 6, 2020

A tarot spread for today, with a major focus on intuition, intelligence and change

Is it better to have false hope rather than no hope at all?

This is something that a lot of people are struggling with right now. We want the truth, but then there is the real danger that we can’t handle the truth. It’s a dilemma.

We all want someone to say that within a few weeks, things will be back to normal. Then if they aren’t, we want a new promise that within a few weeks, things will be back to normal. And on it goes.

The truth, as I know it today, is that sometimes things can never go back to the way they were. That’s actually how things have always been, but right now it just appears more obvious and that is frightening. We reach for security and it isn’t there. Like a terrified horse who runs back into a burning barn looking blindly for safety, we reach for anything that promises a return to what we once knew.

Vaccine Search – The Daily, May 5, 2020

The answers can come from the strangest places

Things I find interesting today:

Llama love – There are so many smart and talented people working around the world to find a treatment or a vaccine for the coronavirus. One of the more interesting ones is using antibodies from llamas that are able to bind to the protein spikes of the virus and render it unable to attach to human cells, thus barring its ability to get in and start to replicate.

“Vaccines have to be given a month or two before infection to provide protection,” said Jason McLellan, associate professor of molecular biosciences at UT Austin and co-senior author. “With antibody therapies, you’re directly giving somebody the protective antibodies and so, immediately after treatment, they should be protected. The antibodies could also be used to treat somebody who is already sick to lessen the severity of the disease.”

You can read more about it here: University of Texas at Austin. “Antibodies from llamas could help in fight against COVID-19, study suggests.” ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 1 May 2020.

Frustration – It’s getting more difficult for some people to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As frustration starts to mount, there is a growing desire to lash out at authority, those closest to you, or just about anything that happens to be around. This is normal. Stay focused on what you can control right now and be as optimistic as possible given the circumstances.

If everything you hear and read is sending you into a tailspin, then you might be suffering from a form of anxiety that is affecting your life in a negative way. Called “generalized anxiety disorder” , or GAD, it is common and can cause chronic worrying and nervousness. There are things that you can do to help yourself get through the anxious moments and find a way to cope.

From the article: : “If you have GAD you may worry about the same things that other people do, but you take these worries to a new level. A co-worker’s careless comment about the economy becomes a vision of an imminent pink slip; a phone call to a friend that isn’t immediately returned becomes anxiety that the relationship is in trouble. Sometimes just the thought of getting through the day produces anxiety. You go about your activities filled with exaggerated worry and tension, even when there is little or nothing to provoke them.”

Read more from this article on HelpGuide.org written by Melinda Smith, M.A. and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D. for some great suggestions to help you get through these challenging times.

Thought for the Morning – Do what you can do today with where you are and what you have. Don’t force things to be the way you want them to be – allow, adjust, and find peace. Fighting against things all of the time is tiring, depressing and mostly futile. Be good to yourself and those around you and stay well.

Out of the most challenging times comes the opportunity to soar to new heights, so stay in the moment and look for your chance to fly.

#101 Do the Best You Can

Find joy. Everything else is optional

That’s it! A list of 100 things that you can do on any given day to start to feel better, with no pressure to try to do everything all of the time. Life is an accumulation of little experiences and accomplishments and successes and failures. No single day needs to be perfect, but in each day if you remember to do at least one thing that makes you feel better then you are on the right path.

Make it easy on yourself to take care of yourself. Start with the basics – get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and eat some fruits and vegetables every day. After that you can add other things from the list, or not. Do what you can and then forget about it. We can’t live perfectly every day, nor is it necessary.

If nothing else, take away from this list the realization that there are multiple things you can do to truly make yourself feel better. Make sure that they fit your lifestyle. When you start to take care of yourself – body, mind, and soul – then you will be in a better position to roll with the waves of life and take good care of those around you.

Success comes from reaching for your dreams and enjoying the journey along the way. Treat your body well so that it can support you in everything you dream of doing. Don’t take your health for granted until something goes wrong. Likewise, learn to breathe deeply and calm your mind to minimize stress and the damage that it can bring.

Live with a sense of purpose and the knowledge that you have some control every day to do things that can help you stay happy and healthy for a long time. Take it easy and never lose your sense of humour. Whatever is happening now, as long as you are still alive for another day there is a possibility to change everything about your life.

Take it easy and pay attention to the little things around you. Embrace each day like the wonderful gift that it is, and fill your heart with love. May you find everything you are looking for in life, and may it be what you hoped it would be when you get it.

Live well.
