Letting Go

Beautiful Dory, dashing Robert, eccentric Ernie, and yours truly – unique and living life our way!

Life without worrying about, or even for a moment considering, what other people think of you is the most freeing thing you can imagine.

Why would we ever allow the opinions of others to affect us in any way?

Growing up, I remember how important it felt to fit in, to have a group that I belonged to. There were kids who did their own thing, who were uniquely different, and the other kids were quite cruel to them.

People who operate outside of the box are considered rebellious, and we can become uncomfortable in their presence.

But if you try to be the same as everyone else, the contribution you are here to offer the world is never realized. The full realization of who you are is stifled.

Be Unique

Apps can change what you look like in an instant. Does it change who you are though?

How much of what you do is based on what you think others will think of you? Do you give a second thought to making decisions that might cause those around you to think that you have lost your mind?

Have you ever been told that you just aren’t acting like yourself?

Consider the persona for a moment. The way you act, talk, eat, dress, everything about you has developed over the years and has become what you and others think of as you.

Is it really though? What if you decided that you were tired of the old you and decided to reinvent yourself?

We can become whoever we want to be in any moment. This happens all of the time, but usually it is some life-altering moment that causes the change. Maybe it is a close-call, an accident that did or didn’t happen, leaving somewhere moments before a disaster occurs, or getting a diagnosis of a serious illness.

Detachment

I am supported in all that I do. I support you too.

The dictionary meaning of detachment is the state of being objective or aloof. That doesn’t sound like my definition.

I like to think that detachment is just not being attached to anything.

Detaching from needing to label everything and find meaning in life is freeing. Sometimes there is no meaning. Probably most of the time there isn’t.

The purpose of life is to live. Birth, living, then dissolution of form – that is how it happens. The judgments that come in between seem to be mostly meaningless and unnecessary. They tend only to bring stress.

Some people need to think that they are here for a special reason, a mission that God sent them on. They are here to save the world and to save humanity, or to leave their mark so they are remembered forever.

Freedom

My idea of freedom – Puerto Rico in 2015, before the storm that changed the landscape

What exactly is freedom? The ability to choose what you do in every moment is a good starting definition.

Freedom is quite a personal thing though, isn’t it? To some it means not having any responsibilities, to others it could mean the ability to live without oppression.

Most of the things we say we want are rooted in our desire to have freedom. We want money so we can do what we want when we want. We want to live in a place where we can move about as we please, not controlled by outside forces.

Freedom in essence is the underlying goal of most desires.

Seasons

Waterfalls in the winter – a great way to cure the blues!

When you live in a part of the world with distinct seasons, it can be interesting to observe how the body and mind respond to the changes. Spring brings renewed energy and optimism, and fall encourages us to slow down and turn within.

Allowing the body to adjust as it needs to the changing daylight hours and the difference in temperatures isn’t always easy. We tend to want to perform at the same level all year, regardless of the cues from within that tell us to slow down or speed up.

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD appropriately enough, affects many people as the days begin to shorten and darkness takes over. By noticing the symptoms and being accepting of the changes, we can navigate the seasons effortlessly and effectively.

Quiet

A new day, unlike any other

It’s quiet now. When I sit down to write these thoughts, it is usually very early in the morning, often before 5:00. The world is asleep as the first blush of sunrise is still some time away, and nature’s slumber continues.

I like it. There is always a hush, but one that feels full of expectation, a newness that hasn’t yet taken form. It just feels as though today could be any kind of day.

Routine robs us of the pleasure of anticipation. We fall in like soldiers, performing our tasks the same way we did the day before, the same way we will tomorrow. Unless something totally unexpected happens, the day will pass in anonymity, devoid of a uniqueness that will make it memorable.

Unless.

The uncertainty of existence is what encourages us to wake up, to not allow the sameness of routine to steal the opportunity to feel alive in every moment. Because today isn’t like any other day, and this moment is independent of any other moment.

Words

No words necessary. I took this photo while jogging one morning. Nature is breathtaking

The power of words is underestimated.

Words can heal or hurt, encourage or belittle, support or destroy. Words are what create us and whether they are spoken aloud or exist as thoughts, they are undeniably the most important tools we have to change our lives.

The Basics For Feeling Great: Sleep

The power of sleep – we all need it!

We all have those nights where sleep just won’t come. Usually it is around a time when we have decisions to make, or we feel out of control in some way. The mind just won’t shut off and let us rest!

Of course, this then makes the situation worse because we can’t make good decisions when we are tired and grumpy.

We take sleep for granted in some ways, but string together a couple of nights where it is elusive and we quickly remember how vital it is to everything we do. We just can’t function at our best without it.

Natural remedies can help and are worth a try. Here are the five I like the most that have worked for me.

Balance

Sun and sea, beauty and me, Costa Rica was the perfect balance of discovery

While we all know that it is important to reduce stress in our lives, how is it even possible in today’s world?

Between work, commuting, family, friends, unavoidable obligations and paying the bills, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of time left in the day to relax and tune out.

If only there were a way to squeeze more hours into the day!

Since that isn’t possible, what we can do is be more efficient during the hours we have. By minimizing time spent doing things that aren’t that important, we can maximize effectiveness with things that are.

First, figure out where your time goes. Take a calendar and mark out blocks as though they were appointments for things you do each day. Include time you spend commuting to work, the time at work, and all the other obligations you deal with.

Now see what is left. This will give you a good idea of how much pressure you are putting yourself under every day. Remember, we can only handle so much before we become overwhelmed, so this is important. Chronic stress can lead to adrenal fatigue, and that will affect the body in a very negative way.

Identity

Me four years ago. Not me anymore. Everything has changed except the name

When you meet someone for the first time, what is your line? Who do you declare yourself to be?

In other words, what is the image of yourself that you present to the world?

Who we are, and who we believe we are, seem like the same thing but that is not necessarily so. We identify with certain groups, be it ethnic, career-related, geographical or perceived class. Most of these identifications were beliefs that we adopted as dictated by the consensus opinion.

For example, I am a writer because I write. When I tell people I am a writer, they have their own preformed judgments as to what this looks like. I had my idea of what it was supposed to look like too, but I have since abandoned those notions.

It actually never looks the same on any given day. Some days the words flow easily and I feel quite accomplished, and other days I look at what I wrote and wonder why it is so bad. I write every day but only on some days do I feel like a writer.
