So, What Do You Do?

I used to do this. Now I do something else. Same me, different role Photo Credit: MrWillWong.com

Hi, I’m Dawn. I’m a writer and an entrepreneur. What do you do?

Every time we meet someone new, one of the first things we do is categorize who we think they are by what they do for a living. We form judgments based on the ideas we have in our minds about what different professions look like.

If I tell you I am a writer, you have your impressions of what that means to you. It probably has nothing to do with me at all, but it gives you a starting place to try to understand who I am.

If I said I was a gambler and I make money betting sports, your conclusions about me would be different. I am still the same person, but the veil you see me through has changed.

What we do shouldn’t define who we are, but in this society it does. We deem others as more or less worthy by the occupation they perform.

Seeking Perfection, Finding Resistance

New moon, time to plan. Full moon, time to act. Moments unfolding in perfection, always

I sure wish I had… I really wish I was… Oh how different things could be if…

Now fill in the blanks.

When I think of these statements and fill in my own blanks, I am one step closer to knowing what my dreams are. And in that knowing, I now have the power to make those things my reality.

I developed the crutch of seeking perfection at a young age. Now I know that the perfection I thought I was working towards was just an excuse not to get started.

At the root of perfectionism lies the seed of procrastination.

Start From Where You Are

Barbados – Someone looked at this rock and saw stairs. What wonderful ingenuity

Everything happens right now. Start from where you are. Where else can you start from?  It’s a good time to check in with yourself and really get in touch with how you feel.

Sometimes we get so busy just getting through life that we lose sight of what we truly want to create.

Check in and ask yourself how you feel. Are you a little bored, like you know that there should be something more to life, but things seem a little pointless sometimes?

Is inertia holding you back? It’s time to break free from the gravitational pull of mediocrity and take control of your life – because it’s your life to control.

Life is way too short to waste time being ordinary.

Taking Care of Number One

Spend some time by yourself and appreciate the beauty that you are

Taking care of number one doesn’t mean that you don’t care about others. It means that you give yourself the best care so you are then able to be there for everyone else.

Doesn’t it make sense that this is the most important thing to focus on, that if you aren’t healthy and happy there is no way you can help others?

For some reason, somewhere along the line, self-care got a bad rap.

If you were drowning, and somebody right next to you was drowning, can you help that person before you help yourself? No – you will both drown.

Simplicity – Putting Ease Into Your Life

Just a bird, doing bird things. Life is simple if you want it to be

Do you ever wonder why it feels like nothing comes easily for you? You swear that someone put a curse on you, or that you have no luck unless it is bad luck, or you just aren’t meant to have good things happen.

When you begin to operate from this mindset, then you are fulfilling your own destiny.

You are actually making sure that things will never go well for you.

We don’t completely understand how powerful words and thoughts are. In every moment, we are creating our future through our energy.

Stop Procrastinating and Get On With Life

I wanted to get my yoga teacher certificate – so I went and did it!

What would life be like if we never procrastinated? Where do you think you might be now if, instead of putting things off, you had simply done what needed to be done without making a big deal about it?

Procrastination takes a lot of effort and doesn’t make us feel good about ourselves. So why do we do it?

If you are honest with yourself, there are a couple of reasons why it seems better to put something off than to just do it. One is fear, and the other is because the project isn’t something you actually want to do.

Why do we do things we don’t want to do? It could be to save money, or to try to make someone else happy, or out of a sense of obligation. When a project excites us we jump ahead and would never think of putting it off. If it holds no interest for us, then we approach it with a sense of resentment and avoidance.

Choosing Your Karma

A beautiful sight, a threatening sky over downtown Toronto

For those of you who are looking to gain something at the expense of someone else, think twice.

While you may feel that you are getting away with it, you never truly are. There is a divine light in this universe that is aware of all. It is awareness itself.

If your goal is to profit while harming someone, in the world of the physical you may think you got away with it, but you have not. There will be retribution and it will be in accordance to the level of the crime.

What you give, you get. This law works 100% of the time.

If your behaviour is making another uncomfortable, then stop. Become more aware of the energy you are putting into the world.

Just because someone is accessible on the internet does not mean that you know them, or that you have the right to contact them or infringe on their personal space.

You do not have the right to try to find out where they live, or to search for personal details about them.

That is invasion. That is something that the universe will deal with.

Just because I am here, it doesn’t mean that I want to know you. Be respectful of me and I will be the same with you.

The Joy of Releasing Negativity

I spent weeks on the beaches of Puerto Rico. The ocean never ceased to mesmerize me

Time to check in with yourself. Is everything good in this moment? Are you warm, fed, and feeling alright? At this exact moment, is everything okay?

If so, then there is nothing to worry about. If you are feeling anxiety, then you are projecting a negative possible future occurrence into the present moment.

You are creating your reality with thoughts of things you don’t want.

If everything is okay today, there is no reason to think that everything won’t be okay tomorrow. But let tomorrow take care of itself.

If things aren’t okay in this moment, then identify what the actual problem is and do something about it. If you can change the life situation, then do so. If you are unable to change it right in this moment, then for now accept it and begin to look for ways to remedy whatever the issue is.

The Ultimate Like

Strength, confidence and self-assurance – these are the pictures I like of me

Judging by the number of books that are coming on the market, the effects of social media on a person’s well-being has become a huge issue.

Basically, people are selling their souls for likes.

It becomes addictive. When you see people engaging with content you created, and liking that content, the desire to have more of that approval becomes the result itself. The content is no longer important, it is trying to figure out what people are going to “like”.

Unfortunately, for young women this is turning into showing more of their bodies as they look for approval.

Where these platforms are great tools for educating, inspiring, and motivating others, they are turning into sites where egos are built up and then torn down. The situation is getting out of hand.

Give to Get, Give to Give

My Barbados friend. I gave him a pomegranate seed, he gave me joy.

Giving for the sake of giving feels so good, I take every opportunity I can find to do it.

I give a smile, a kind remark, maybe a compliment or my advice if asked. I give until it doesn’t hurt.

True giving is never painful. It is offered with no expectation of receiving anything in return, except for the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you made someone’s day a little easier, a little brighter.

You never know what that person might go on and do. Maybe she will have the chance to give to someone else, and so on, and so on.
