Righteous Indignation

Sometimes the road of life isn’t easy to navigate. Appreciate the beauty of Costa Rica

It’s a sensitive world we live in. Everything we say and do is scrutinized; what was once considered harmless fun is now grounds for lawsuits, dismissal at work, or public scorn.

The advance of social media in the last few years has expedited this process to where things that were once in a small sphere can become worldwide within minutes.

If you offend someone, there is going to be a court of public opinion ready to persecute you to the full extent of opinionated law.

Much of it is exposing long-held prejudices that need to see the light of day. Any belittling of someone based on race, gender, or physical limitations is a mistake. It is wrong.

You Are Okay

Everything is a miracle. So are you

I think about what it’s like for people who become so distraught, so discouraged with life that they decide they no longer want to live. What a lonely, sad place that must be.

To get to a state where there seems to be only one way out is a complete breakdown of faith in yourself and in the process of life. We are the only species that is able to use our minds in such a destructive manner.

But if you have reached a state where you have lost the ability to see anything good on the horizon, you have reached the place where a monumental shift can take place.

If you have nothing to live for, then you have nothing to lose. And if you have nothing to lose, then you have every chance to become someone new.

Failure and Why It’s the Best Thing That Can Happen

The infamous snow-yoga shoot. I failed a few times before I got the pose I wanted – and it was -20C!

None of us likes to fail.

We set out to achieve something, hoping that we will find instant success. Some things come naturally to us; others do not. Still, we try multiple things over the years and eventually hone in on a few that we enjoy.

If one measure of your success is that you don’t fail very often, then you aren’t challenging yourself enough.

With each failure comes the discovery of how not to do something. There is nothing right or wrong about the results that are produced – they either move you toward or away from the ultimate goal.

Each time you attempt something and it doesn’t work out, you have taken one step towards the achievement of what you are trying to do. You get a little closer every time.

When Nothing Makes Sense Anymore

Even lakes get agitated sometimes, but then they turn smooth as glass

You’ve done everything you were supposed to do. You went to school, got an education, got a job, turned it into a career, got married, bought a house, had kids, raised the kids, continued working, and now you are retired or starting to think about what’s next.

And you are miserable. You played the game the way you were taught, and you still feel empty inside.

From the outside everything looks good. You have friends, family, status, and some degree of comfort and security.

Still, something is missing.

When Being Right is Dangerous

Look before you commit – you never know what might be coming if you don’t

I watched someone walking the other day. He was an older gentleman and he looked like he had somewhere important to be.

With head down, he moved across the road in a crosswalk. He clearly had the right to cross, but the car that was coming felt otherwise. It was a narrow miss.

He was outraged. He swore, shook his fist, and let the driver know that he was wrong not to stop. Angry man was right – the onus was on the driver to stop and give pedestrians the right of way.

But would it matter who was right if there had been impact? Angry man would have been lying there, broken or worse, correct in his assessment of the situation but wrong in outcome.

Sometimes, being right isn’t the most important thing.

The Voice Within

Believe in the power that lies within, the intelligence that runs through everything

Life would be so much easier if we could see into the future, maybe even just a little bit, to help us make big decisions.

If I take that job, how will it turn out? If I get divorced, will I be happy or miserable? Should I move, stay, invest, divest, retire, switch careers, or drive a different way to work because there is going to be an accident up ahead?

Something that minimizes the uncertainty and helps us make better choices would be useful. If it was something that prevented us from experiencing the big hurts in life, then it would be most useful indeed.

Although we are here to experience many different things, both desirable and perhaps less so, there is a way to lessen the number of circumstances that seem to line up against us every day.

The voice within, the intuition, the gut feeling you get in the moment that gives you a feeling of what you should do or who you should trust – that is the helper that we all possess.

Getting What You Deserve

Joy can be found in sharing sweet things with good friends – or just treating yourself!

In this moment I have decided that I want to be happy. It is my choice to be joyful, and no matter what is going on outside of me this is the state I choose.

There are terrible things happening in the world. People are starving, there are conflicts that could lead to war, the climate is a concern, and our very existence seems threatened.

Still, I choose to be joyful. I am unable to suffer enough to change what is out of my control.

I have tremendous sympathy for others who are struggling, and I do what is within my power to help when I can.

Still I feel joy.

Are You In the Day Or Is the Day In You?

Get up, decide who you want to be, and go for it. It’s your life

Waking up refreshed, we get ready to move into a new day. Each day is a new beginning, a chance to review, reset, and take steps to get closer to where we would like to be.

Then the day starts to happen. Sometimes there are things that you enjoy, and often there are things that you don’t. Before you know it, the optimism of the morning is a distant memory and you are back in the routine of fighting and struggling just to keep it together.

Any thoughts of thriving are out the window.

Imposing restrictions on what it takes for us to feel joy can be disheartening. If you depend on others to act a certain way in order for you to be happy, then you have lost control of the one thing in life you have power over – your inner state of being.

You Owe It to the World to Try

Something about a beautiful sunrise is so inspiring to me

When you feel powerless, you are denying yourself the chance to shine.

When you feel beat-down, taken advantage of, and defeated it is difficult to find the strength to move forward.

Leave the self-judgment behind for a moment. Know that you deserve more than what you have.

We are all special. There is something we are all good at, a unique talent for us to share with the world. If you don’t allow yourself to discover it, or to share it, then you are depriving the world of a gift that is needed.

The Pain Gain

My poor knee!! I fell when I wasn’t paying attention while jogging in Puerto Rico. It brought me back to the moment instantly

Pain is something we all wish to avoid. Whether it is physical or emotional, pain can dominate all that it touches and colour the experiences of those it affects.

It is impossible to live a carefree existence if you are in chronic pain. It is also difficult to reach to be the best version of yourself if emotional pain is torturing you from the inside.

While never wanted, pain can serve a very useful purpose.

What pain does is forces us to come into the present moment. Acute pain, something that is sharp and in your face right now, yanks you from whatever complacent existence you were living in and demands that you pay attention to it now.
