#94 Take Control of Your Thoughts

Life is a balancing act. Navigate it joyfully by being in charge of your thoughts

I am in control of my thoughts. Say this to yourself right now. Repeat it a couple of times and notice all of the thoughts that rush in to tell you that no, you aren’t in control, because this person is doing this and the government is doing that and everything around you is forcing you to be a certain way.

Now take a deep breath and say it again. I am in control of my thoughts. It’s a very simple statement, but it is one that can change your life in an instant. Whatever is going on around you, whatever is happening in every situation and at every moment are occurrences outside of you, but when you remember that you are in control of your thoughts your internal experience can be your choice.

You don’t need to be a victim anymore.

Action – If you have ever tried to meditate and found it impossible to settle your mind, then this will be a good practice for you. Or if you hear something in the media and it upsets you, or someone says something and you feel emotions that are unsettling or make you unhappy, this may be the most important thing that you will ever learn. The way that you think about things can actually change the things that you are thinking about. Your perception creates your reality.

When you understand that you can take charge of how you process information and how it makes you feel, it frees up tremendous amounts of energy and puts you in a better-feeling place. Everything we do is motivated by certain needs, which can be different for each of us. Some of the common ones are security, love, safety and comfort. Depending on how you think, you might find that whatever is the most important to you already surrounds you.

Steps – Begin the day with the statement, “I am in control of my thoughts.” Before you turn on the news or look at your phone or let the outside world into your mind, remember that you are the one in charge. You call the shots. You decide how you want to react in every moment no matter the situation. Feeling anger is a choice. So is feeling empathy or love. No one puts thoughts into your head but you.

Write those words down so you see them throughout the day. Bringing yourself into the moment and becoming aware of what you are thinking might not seem easy at first, but like anything else you will get better at it over time.

Why It Makes You Feel Better – Regardless of the way you think about things, life is going to happen anyway. There will be injustice, and crime, and bad things will happen to good people. None of that exists within you. You can never become miserable enough to make the world a better place. There is no strength in thinking about all of the events and circumstances that upset you and allowing your emotions to get caught up in the momentum of misery.

There is strength in seeing a situation and choosing thoughts that are productive. Higher frequency emotions of love, joy and peacefulness come from acceptance and neutrality. Fighting against something implies resistance, and leads to anger, fear and resentment. These low-frequency emotions take you away from a place where you can find solutions.

Example – Albert Einstein said, “Everything in life is vibration.” Your thoughts produce your emotions, and your emotions have a vibration that attracts other vibrations of a similar frequency. When you are miserable, you quite literally attract more misery into your life. When you take control of your thoughts and are vibrating at a higher level, you will feel lighter, happier, and more at ease. Lower vibrations feel heavy, dark, and confused.

I am in control of my thoughts, and the way I think is how I see the world. Live with this knowledge and you won’t ever need to spend another day feeling like a victim.
