There is something about creating in this world that stirs the soul and gives us purpose and a sense of accomplishment.
As children we amuse ourselves by playing different roles and using ordinary objects to construct elaborate fantasies.
As adults, some go on to build companies or to be inventors, making real in the material world what once existed only in their minds.
Some will become artists. Whether writers or painters, sculptors or singers, they give a physical manifestation to what began only as a thought.
I believe that to create is as necessary a part of life as sleeping and eating.
Creation can take many different forms. You don’t need to be Michelangelo to express this innate need.
Some people cook and find expression through that. Others like to decorate, turning their living space into an expression of themselves that makes them proud. Even the clothes we wear can be a creative expression of who we are.
There is excitement in taking something from your mind and allowing it to be expressed in a tangible form. Limiting these creative desires can stop the flow of life, creating a blockage in you that may ultimately affect your physical health.
Besides, it’s a lot of fun.
Art therapy can be an important tool of recovery for people struggling with mental issues. Could it be that stifled creativity is causing us harm in ways we don’t even understand? Maybe it’s time to stop taking everything so seriously.
When is the last time that you allowed yourself the freedom to create something?
We get so busy with the everyday routine of living that we neglect the things that bring us joy. We might judge this time spent in artistic endeavour as a waste, as taking us away from the important things we should be doing.
But creation is what life is. Look around. Nature is constantly creating, building, destroying and then rebuilding again.
Every sunrise is different, a magnificent creation that is temporary and marvellous every time. Seasons change, things come and go, and the only constant is change.
Creativity allows us to take the power of bringing something new into the world that is under our control. We become mini gods, expressing through whatever avenue we find pleasing.
I know that I feel better when allowing my mind to wander, coming up with ideas of things that would be enjoyable to see. Drawing isn’t my best skill, but I can imagine drawings that would look cool.
Singing well is challenging, but I can listen to others using their voices creatively and appreciate their unique talents.
If no one created or, even worse, if they created and didn’t share their talents with the rest of us, this would be a very cold, harsh world indeed. The Renaissance followed a period in history that was devoid of creativity, marking the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity.
We still celebrate the artists that shared their talents with the world during that time, and that was 500 years ago.
We are all gifted with a talent to create. It looks different for everyone, so take the time to find out what your gift is. Then nurture it.
Write, paint, draw, sing, decorate, build, invent, or do whatever you need to do to become the full expression of who you are.
Allow yourself to shine as brightly as you can, and your life will change in ways you can’t begin to imagine.
