It’s like walking a tightrope sometimes.
Be your best self. Do what makes you happy. Create everything you desire, and get more of what you want.
Are there any repercussions to this though? Is it possible that in the pursuit to live the lives of our dreams, we are squashing the souls of others?
It doesn’t have to be that way, but if you aren’t naturally considerate or empathetic then a selfish attitude might turn you into something you didn’t intend to be.
Dial it all back for a moment. There is a way to have and do and be everything you want while still being a nice person. There is only one rule you need to remember.
The Golden Rule is all there is. It’s something we should learn in school as we are learning our ABC’s.
Five centuries before Jesus taught the Golden Rule, Confucius told his followers, “Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself.”
The Bible version we are more familiar with is similar: “In everything, do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matt. 7:12).
It kind of brings everything into focus.
If you are stealing to get what you want, then you will eventually lose everything you hold dear. The law of reciprocity will catch up to you in ways you don’t even want to know.
If you are inflicting emotional or physical pain onto others in your quest to be your best, that will boomerang on you with a force that will knock you down for the count.
If all of the rulers of the world and all of the politicians stepped back and really looked at their actions through the lens of the Rule, then the world would be a much different place.
Imagine if there were some sort of magic fairy dust that someone could sprinkle that reached every earth citizen at the same time, and it made all of us operate only under the Rule.
The world we live in would change in an instant.
There would be no starvation, no greed, no gluttony and no need to take from someone else before they take from you.
Crime would cease to exist, abuse would stop, and a selflessness would emerge as the dominant energy in every corner of the world.
It’s a lot to hope for I guess. Considering where we are right now, it would take a whole lot of fairy dust to get anywhere close.
But we can make a difference. We can choose how to conduct ourselves in every moment of every day.
Let’s not take anything that doesn’t belong to us. That is stealing and we don’t want to be stolen from.
What if we don’t judge someone else for how they look or act? I don’t want to be judged so I won’t indulge in it.
We could not listen to or participate in mindless gossip that is destructive. I have had this type of energy directed at me and didn’t like it, so I won’t do it.
Today we can be kind with no expectation of anything in return.
Let’s make our own way in the world, providing a useful service that helps others. We don’t need someone else to support us. I don’t like it when someone feels entitled to my money, but If I choose to give it away that is different. When someone thinks they can just take it that is wrong.
Lastly, we can choose to feel peaceful inside. We can only control what is within, and that is enough. I release any need to feel justified resentment because it doesn’t make me feel good.
Today I will live by the Golden Rule in every moment. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone decided to do that too?
