Accountability

Everything is exactly the way it needs to be. Be kind and enjoy this life

It’s like walking a tightrope sometimes.

Be your best self. Do what makes you happy. Create everything you desire, and get more of what you want.

Are there any repercussions to this though? Is it possible that in the pursuit to live the lives of our dreams, we are squashing the souls of others?

It doesn’t have to be that way, but if you aren’t naturally considerate or empathetic then a selfish attitude might turn you into something you didn’t intend to be.

Dial it all back for a moment. There is a way to have and do and be everything you want while still being a nice person. There is only one rule you need to remember.

All Good Things Come to Those Who Create

Every day nature creates something amazing, using whatever tools she chooses

There is something about creating in this world that stirs the soul and gives us purpose and a sense of accomplishment.

As children we amuse ourselves by playing different roles and using ordinary objects to construct elaborate fantasies.

As adults, some go on to build companies or to be inventors, making real in the material world what once existed only in their minds.

Some will become artists. Whether writers or painters, sculptors or singers, they give a physical manifestation to what began only as a thought.

I believe that to create is as necessary a part of life as sleeping and eating.

Being Good With Being You

A moment in time in Costa Rica, no need to be anything other than who I am

Do you ever take the time to be proud of yourself?

Do you ever say, “ I am doing my best and that is enough right now, and I am enough” and actually mean it?

The proliferation of self-help books and courses and seminars makes me wonder if any of us think that we are doing okay without needing to be changed into someone else.

We all possess a need to be creative. We like to fix, tinker, and adjust things with the idea that they can always be better, and in ourselves we aspire to be more than who we are.

We want to do better. Our bodies should look fitter, we should read more, be more intelligent, make better decisions and have more money.

Running Away

Just another day in paradise – or is it? Barbados is beautiful, but home is where the heart is

I used to think that I wanted to live on an island, or at least somewhere tropical. It would be so amazing, never having to deal with cold weather or snow or slippery sidewalks.

So I tried it out. I worked in Mexico for nine months. I went to school in Nice, France for a summer. And for the last five years, I spent at least three weeks and as long as six every winter living on an island.

What did I discover? There’s no place like home.

It’s one thing to stay in a hotel or in a resort during a vacation, but that isn’t what actually living somewhere is like.

When you are staying in a condo and cooking your own food and having to fend for yourself, it isn’t nearly as romantic or wonderful as you might think.

Feeling Good

Taking time to think about what I want is good; putting off what I need to do really isn’t

I just want to feel good.

Whatever I do, this is the ultimate goal. Whatever I think I need in my life, the ultimate aim is to feel good.

It could be a job, a partner, some kind of food or a glass of wine. At the root of everything I do is the desire to feel good.

So why do some of the things I choose to do not support that ultimate goal?

I have been involved with people I knew would be no good for me. I have had more to drink or eat than I should, at some level knowing that I was going to pay for it but unwilling in the moment to stop.

I eat things sometimes because they taste so good, and then my body fights back and nothing about it is good anymore.

It seems kind of insane to do this knowing that it won’t lead me back to what I want, which is to feel good.

Rewarding Ourselves

Reward, don’t punish. Fruit and berries with coconut yogurt, granola, nuts, and seeds hits the sweet spot

I had a hard day. I deserve to have dessert.

This has been a tough week. I really need that glass of wine.

It’s just a couple of doughnuts. Tomorrow I will eat better but right now I need this.

Sound familiar at all?

It’s natural to want to reward ourselves for surviving when times are tough. And these days, just by the way society is set up, times tend to be tough a lot.

But when we reward ourselves, are we doing something that helps us or puts us further in the hole?

Angel By Morning, Devil By Night

It’s like having a split personality really.

Every day I wake up, sometimes full of energy and sometimes not as much. My thoughts quickly flow back to what I accomplished or didn’t get done the day before.

And I remember all of the things I did that I said I wasn’t going to do anymore.

Everything seems so much easier first thing in the morning. I wake up full of resolve, ready to get things done, eat healthy foods, be proactive and responsible and completely focused on what I need to do.

Then sometime in the afternoon, I find myself not quite as enthusiastic as when I first set out that day.

In the morning we feel ready to conquer the world. We know who we want to be, what we want to do, and what we need to do better.

And then life happens.

A Blank Page

My first day in Costa Rica, and this is what I saw. Nature paints a beautiful picture, and I stand and look in awe

I sit to write every morning having no idea what the subject is going to be. There is only a blank page before me, and in a moment the thoughts begin to flow and words start to appear on the page.

I have no idea where they come from, I just know that they will come. Without fail, every day, the page begins to fill up with those thoughts and then I walk away.

Often when I return to edit the words, I can’t remember having written them. It is like reading it for the first time. It is a form of automatic writing, where nothing is censored and it just spills on to the page.

The editing usually involves rearranging the blocks into something cohesive, because often the thoughts are scattered around with no thread connecting them.

Sometimes I have to change the title because what I thought I was going to write about turned into something else completely.

The Art of Satisfaction

My first trip to Puerto Rico, I saw families spend time together singing and laughing and playing. They truly enjoy what they have

The human condition is interesting. Some would say it is an existence of suffering, some would say it is a delight.

Most would likely feel that it falls somewhere between the two.

When you get a moment, the next time you see a baby just notice how simple life is when we come into the world. We are entirely helpless and are dependant on having someone to tend to our every needs. The needs are basic though – food, warmth, and cleanliness.

And love.

Studies have shown that human touch and a loving environment are vital components of how we are able to cope in the world. We can survive without love, but it is difficult to thrive.

Wanting and Needing

Do I look happy? I was! I don’t need these moments to be happy, but sometimes I want them

There are things we want, and there are things we need. Are these the same?

We need to breathe, obviously. Take away air for more than a couple of minutes and we cease to exist. Food and water are needs, although we can last a little longer without either of these than we can without air.

Other than that, the basic needs of shelter and safety are important, although not entirely necessary to survive. I still feel I need them though in order to function beyond a level of just surviving.

There really isn’t much else. Our needs can be as basic as this.

Of course, we want much more and that is an important part of who we are.

There is everything right about wanting to create a life of comfort and ease. There is no nobility in suffering, unless you feel that is your karma in this lifetime and you are satisfied with that.
