How much of what you do is based on what you think others will think of you? Do you give a second thought to making decisions that might cause those around you to think that you have lost your mind?
Have you ever been told that you just aren’t acting like yourself?
Consider the persona for a moment. The way you act, talk, eat, dress, everything about you has developed over the years and has become what you and others think of as you.
Is it really though? What if you decided that you were tired of the old you and decided to reinvent yourself?
We can become whoever we want to be in any moment. This happens all of the time, but usually it is some life-altering moment that causes the change. Maybe it is a close-call, an accident that did or didn’t happen, leaving somewhere moments before a disaster occurs, or getting a diagnosis of a serious illness.
You hear about it all of the time. People reach rock bottom and are born again, or they suffer a crisis of consciousness and become someone they never used to be.
I think this is quite freeing. If you always considered yourself to be a shy person, an angry one, unlucky or not graceful, by changing your thoughts about yourself you can literally change who you are.
It doesn’t have to take years for this to happen either. It can happen in an instant. Try it and see. When you find yourself falling into the routine of who you have always been, and it isn’t a trait that you adore, change it.
The only way to be able to do this is to become conscious of the habits that define you. Do you procrastinate all of the time? Then for today, decide that you won’t indulge in that behaviour. Every time the old pattern arises, notice it and do the opposite.
If you reach for dessert after every meal and you actually want to lose some weight, then for today don’t do it. Go for a walk instead.
Recognize the habits that define who you are and are not ones that support who you want to be. Know that you can change them in an instant, and you are the only one holding you back.
Free yourself by knowing that in every moment you are making choices. You are either who you want to be, or you choose to remain as the person you have always been. Don’t allow the persona to limit your potential to achieve great things in this life.
